A. Ideas from Community Jobs Forum held in Tampa in December 2009.
The Platform and Issues Committee had selected several items
from January’s Community Jobs Forum to develop as a resolution. The result of several
months of discussion and deliberation is the following resolution that we once
again urge the Hillsborough Democratic Party to adopt.
Whereas our local
economy is still suffering from the effects of the recession that began before
the election of 2008 and is responding only slowly to the stimulus package
instituted by the Obama administration and the United States Congress, a
package that many economists believe is
too meager to meet the needs of the situation,
Therefore, be it
resolved that the Hillsborough Democratic Party encourages governments at
all levels to support at least the following actions:
1. Extending unemployment benefits
for those individuals without jobs until the unemployment rate falls below 8%.
2. Mandating an expeditious
distribution of federal government grants to states and local governments to
rebuild infrastructures and to build new buildings and structures.
3. Expanding programs of the Small
Business Administration so that banks cannot stand in the way of financing and
making loans to small businesses.
4. Authorizing the federal
government to serve as employer of last resort much as President Roosevelt did
in a similar depression era – nobody willing to work should be denied
employment.
